The holidays are all about indulging in the cozy flavors of the season, and nothing says festive quite like the combination of sweet oranges and rich chocolate. These candied orange slices dipped in chocolate are not only beautiful but also make a perfect homemade gift for friends, neighbors, or family.

Unlike store-bought treats, homemade candied oranges have a fresh, vibrant flavor and a slightly chewy texture that pairs perfectly with dark or milk chocolate. Plus, they look gorgeous in a gift box or jar, making them a thoughtful addition to any holiday celebration.

Candied Orange Slices Dipped in Chocolate

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 2 large oranges

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 6 oz dark or milk chocolate

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

  • Optional: sea salt, crushed nuts, or edible glitter for topping

Let’s Make It

1. Blanch the oranges: Slice the oranges into ¼-inch thick rounds and remove seeds. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the orange slices and boil 4-5 minutes.

2. Make the simple syrup: In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water. Heat over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.

3. Candy the orange slices: Add the blanched orange slices in a single layer. Simmer gently for 45–60 minutes, flipping occasionally, until slices are translucent.

4. Dry the slices: Remove slices with a slotted spoon and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Let dry several hours or overnight.

5. Melt the chocolate: Melt chocolate and coconut oil in the microwave in short intervals or over a double boiler until smooth.

6. Dip the oranges: Dip half of each candied slice in chocolate. Shake off excess and return to parchment.

7. Add optional toppings: Sprinkle with sea salt, crushed nuts, or edible glitter before the chocolate sets.

8. Let set: Allow chocolate to harden at room temperature or refrigerate for 10–15 minutes.

Tips for the Perfect Candied Oranges

  • Blanching is key: This step removes the bitterness from the orange peel and ensures your slices are tender and sweet.

  • Drying is essential: Allow the oranges to dry thoroughly before dipping in chocolate to prevent sogginess.

  • Chocolate choice: Dark chocolate balances the sweetness of the oranges, while milk chocolate adds a creamy, sweeter flavor.

  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. For longer storage, layer parchment between slices and refrigerate.

  • Gift idea: Stack a few slices in a small decorative box or jar and tie with a festive ribbon. Perfect for neighbors or holiday party favors!
